English Language Lab Opening
On Tuesday, December 20, Ambassador Powell took part in a ceremony inaugurating the new English Language Laboratory financed by the U.S. Embassy at Ecole Normale Superieur (ENS).
U.S. Embassy Donates Medical Supplies
Ambassador Jo Ellen Powell presented a donation of more than four tons of medical supplies to the Friendship Hospital of Nouakchott on Wednesday, December 14.
U.S. Embassy Supports UNICEF
Ambassador Powell represented the U.S. Embassy at a UNICEF ceremony launching a school insertion plan for child workers on December 12 at a public elementary school in the El Mina section of the capital city. The U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott illustrated its commitment to working with the government of Mauritania, international organizations, and local civil society to enhance the protection of human rights in Mauritania by contributing $500,000 (145 million ouguiya) to UNICEF in 2010 to Care for Child Victims of Slavery and Trafficking in Mauritania.
English Teachers Receive Training

Official Call for Proposals to Respond to the Drought Crisis in the Sahel
The United States has launched an official call for proposals to respond to the drought crisis in the Sahel. The USAID-funded “Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET)” projects insufficient food access among the poorest segments of the population in affected areas including Mauritania. USAID, through its Bureau of Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Affairs, is prepared to respond to the serious humanitarian situation

USAID Fighting Food Insecurity
Ambassador Jo Ellen Powell participated in a ceremony marking the receipt of 400 tons of food commodities composed of fortified vegetable oil, corn soy blend flour, lentils and bulgur wheat. This food will benefit 6,500 malnourished children and 5,500 pregnant and breastfeeding women enrolled in the Counterpart International program funded by USAID.

The U.S. Embassy’s Humanitarian Assistance Team organized a Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) in Mederdra, Trarza on October 21. More than 320 patients received treatment from medical professionals.

Embassy Supports Job Training
On October 5, Ambassador Jo Ellen Powell and the Mauritanian Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Sidi Ould Tah, took part in a signing ceremony for a grant of $990,000 to the Mauritanian government to support a technical and vocational training program for youth set up by the host government.

English Access Microscholarship Graduation
On October 12, 2011, Deputy Chief of Mission Carol Kalin presided over a graduation ceremony of the 3rd group of the English Access Microscholarship Program. The event was held at the Nouakchott English Center (NEC), the English language provider for the Access Program.

Eric Descombes with coaches in Nouakchott
Eric Descombes, former professional soccer player and current coach, visited Mauritania from September 17-26. He held workshops for coaches and training sessions for players in Nouakchott, Aleg, and Kaedi.

9/11 Commemoration Ceremony
Ambassador Powell commemorated 9/11 in a small ceremony at the U.S. Embassy, presenting letters of intent to donate medical supplies from Islamic Relief USA to honor the memory of Christopher Leggett, the American killed here in 2009, and other victims of terrorism.
