Press Release

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson’s visit to Mauritania

Congressman Bennie G. Thomson, Representative from Mississippi, made a working visit to Mauritania from December 27 to December 28, 2005.

During his visit, he met with the President of the Council for Justice and Democracy, Col. Ely O. Mohamed Vall; Prime Minister  Sidi Mohamed O. Boubacar; and the president of the national electoral commission, Col. Cheikh Sid'Ahmed O. Babamine as well as other members of the Mauritanian government.  These meetings, which included U.S. Ambassador Joseph LeBaron, continued the traditionally excellent bilateral relations which have existed between the two countries.

Congressman Thompson also held meetings with political and civil society leaders to further develop cooperative political and economic relations and to hear of the progress being made.

The visit was only the second visit to Mauritania by a member of Congress in the last fifteen years.
