Literacy Campaign Continues

 Embassy Teams Visit Schools

Ambassador Charles H. Twining, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United States in Mauritania, presided at two ceremonies on February 12 and 13, 2007 to mark the donation of books to several schools in the wilayas (provinces) of Gorgol and Brakna.   The selected schools were the Collège of Luxeiba, the Lycée of Boghé, and Ecole 1 of Boghé.  The donations included a collection of books in Arabic, French, and English covering subjects such as history, literature, science, economics and finance, computers, health and several others.

Other delegations from the Embassy, led respectively by the Consul and the Public Affairs Officer, made similar donations of books to schools in the city of Nouadhibou during the month of February.

The contributions were part of the continuation of a vast campaign against illiteracy that the Embassy of the United States began September 8, 2006 on the occasion of International Literacy Day.  Twenty-four schools of the seventy-six schools scheduled to receive the books have so far received them.  The Embassy will continue to work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to complete the campaign.
