U.S. Embassy Applauds Conduct of First Round Elections

During the legislative and municipal elections held on November 19, the U.S. Embassy deployed eighteen observer teams throughout the country.  We noted that the elections proceeded in an atmosphere of calm and there were no indications of fraud.  Based on our observations and conversations with election officials, the elections were conducted satisfactorily.

We heartily congratulate the Mauritanian people, the authorities, and all those international participants who worked so diligently to make the November 19 elections a true exercise in democracy.

We will continue to monitor developments with interest, particularly the results of the second round of elections scheduled for December 3.
