Press Release
American Government Satisfied with Good Conduct of Elections
in Mauritania
During the second round of the Mauritanian presidential elections on March 25, 2007 the United States Embassy deployed numerous observation teams throughout the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
Based on our own observations and contacts we had with different officials, we can affirm that these elections, like those which preceded them, took place in a credible, just, and transparent manner.
On this occasion, we address our sincere congratulations to the Mauritanian people and to the Mauritanian transition authorities, who worked so assiduously to guarantee a successful transition to democracy. This success, full of promise, makes Mauritania a democratic model for Africa as well as for the Arab world.
We thank as well all our international partners, in particular the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), for the support they gave to our efforts in Mauritania with a view to reaching the anticipated results.
The United States of America, known for its attachment to the principles of liberty and democracy, is delighted by this positive evolution in Mauritania and wishes to see cooperative relations between it and the United States grow yet stronger.
