U.S. Embassy Nouakchott
Warden Message
1 February 2008
The U.S. Embassy confirms that armed assailants attacked a restaurant complex and the adjacent Israeli Embassy in Nouakchott at approximately 2:30 a.m. on February 1 leading to several injuries. No American citizens were injured in the attack. Mauritanian authorities continue to investigate the incident and have yet to determine the actual target of the attack – whether the Israeli Embassy or the restaurant complex or both.
As stated in the Embassy Warden Message of December 28, American citizens are urged to heighten their awareness and maintain a low profile. American citizens should use caution and watch for any suspicious or unusual activity. The U.S. Embassy recommends that American citizens defer non-essential travel outside of urban areas, and if traveling outside of cities, travel in groups of two vehicles or more. American citizens are also urged to register with the U.S. Embassy. They can do so in person or at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/.
The Department of State continues to monitor security conditions overseas and, as always, will promptly disseminate information affecting the safety of Americans abroad through its consular information program. These documents are available on the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
