U.S. Embassy Nouakchott
Warden Message
14 February 2008
The U.S. Embassy has learned of possible demonstrations to protest the republication by several European newspapers of the Mohamed cartoons that originally appeared in a Danish newspaper in 2006. Demonstrations will likely take place Friday, February 15th, following Friday afternoon prayers. These demonstrations typically begin in the area of the Saudi Mosque in Nouakchott.
We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. American citizens are also urged to register with the U.S. Embassy. They can do so in person or at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/.
The Department of State continues to monitor security conditions overseas and, as always, will promptly disseminate information affecting the safety of Americans abroad through its consular information program. These documents are available on the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
