U.S. Embassy Nouakchott, Mauritania

Local Mauritanian media reports are warning that there is a potential for terrorist attacks in Mauritania coordinated by Al Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).  These reports are unconfirmed and have not mentioned specific targets.  The U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott has not changed its security posture as a result of these reports, but would like to remind U.S. citizens in Mauritania to continue to follow prudent personal security precautions.  The U.S. Embassy also reminds citizens of the current Travel Warning in place for Mauritania and recommends that they review the personal security recommendations highlighted in the U.S. Department of State’s March 11, 2011 Travel Warning for Mauritania.

You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the U.S. Embassy Nouakchott web site (http://mauritania.usembassy.gov).  You can also get global updates at the U.S. Department of State's, Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_966.html).
