U.S. Embassy Nouakchott
Warden Message
28 December 2007
The U.S. Embassy confirms that a group of presumed terrorists attacked and killed four Mauritanian soldiers near the town of Al Ghalawiya in northern Mauritania. The attack happened on December 27. This is the second terrorist attack in Mauritania since December 24. The possibility that further attacks may occur cannot be discounted.
American citizens are, therefore, urged to heighten their awareness and maintain a low profile. American citizens should use caution and watch for any suspicious or unusual activity. The U.S. Embassy recommends that American citizens defer non-essential travel outside of urban areas, and if traveing outside of cities, travel in groups of two vehicles or more. American citizens are also urged to register with the U.S. Embassy. They can do so in person or at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/.
The Department of State continues to monitor security conditions overseas and, as always, will promptly disseminate information affecting the safety of Americans abroad through its consular information program. These documents are available on the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
